WHY A CHRISTIAN SHOULD NOT DRINK ALCOHOL OR STRONG LIQUOR?

WHY A CHRISTIAN SHOULD NOT DRINK ALCOHOL OR STRONG LIQUOR?

(Pastor Thaddaeus Thompson: TMGMinistries)

Someone sent me this scripture and asked me to explain why Christians cannot drink alcohol: Deuteronomy 14:26 KJV: “And thou shalt bestow that money for whatsoever thy soul lusteth after, for oxen, or for sheep, or for wine, or for strong drink, or for whatsoever thy soul desireth: and thou shalt eat there before the Lord thy God, and thou shalt rejoice, thou, and thine household,” (Deuteronomy 14:26 KJV)

Deuteronomy 14:26 is about being set aside for God’s sacred works. How do we know? From the scriptures below, where it says, “ ... for the child shall be a Nazarite to God from the womb to the day of his death” (Judges 13:17). The Nazarene, in this context is a person set aside by God. In the Old Testament, God selected a few, like Moses, Joshua, the prophets, the high priest, etc. as contact point and to do sacred and kingdom works here on earth until death. They were referred to as “Nazarite.”

IN DEUT. 14:26 the message was addressed to ordinary Jews of no priesthood lineage. But, when it got to the priesthood and sacred people, he said they cannot do it. Why? Because they belong to the set-asides.

THE NEXT SCRIPTURES IS NOT FOR THE SET-ASIDES

“And thou shalt bestow that money for whatsoever thy soul lusteth after, for oxen, or for sheep, or for wine, or for strong drink, or for whatsoever thy soul desireth: and thou shalt eat there before the Lord thy God, and thou shalt rejoice, thou, and thine household,”

Deuteronomy 14:26 KJV

THIS IS FOR THE SET-ASIDES:

“But he said unto me, Behold, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and now drink no wine nor strong drink, neither eat any unclean thing: for the child shall be a Nazarite to God from the womb to the day of his death.”

Judges 13:7 KJV

In the Old Testament, the priesthood was the set-asides. They were the only ones who could communicate with God directly. Therefore, God forbade them from lusting and drinking strong drinks (alcohol). When Jesus died on the cross, all believers, then until the end of time, were made priest (1 Peter 2:9):

“But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:”

1 Peter 2:9 KJV

Because of this scripture believers are not allowed to drink, or else they lose their royal priesthood status. Jesus came not to destroy the scriptures but to fulfill them. Laws that were existing before him were replaced with new ones for better understanding.

Before: Thy soul should rejoice in the things listed - money for whatsoever thy soul lusteth after, for oxen, or for sheep, or for wine, or for strong drink, or for whatsoever thy soul desireth.

Now: Thy soul shall desire ONLY in Jesus.

Before: You were no high priest, you can drink

Today: You are high priest, you cannot drink.

Amen
